Rastafarianism is an Afro-syncretic religion with roots in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Followers believe in the divinity of Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia (1930-1974). The term derives from the Title, Ras, and the name Tafari, the first name of Haile Selassie before his coronation. They believe that the Emperor is Jah Rastafari, an incarnation of God, the second coming of Jesus to Earth. Practices include the spiritual use of cannabis and the rejection of "Babylon", or materialist and oppressive society.
History[]
Rastafarianism traces its roots back to the Old World, during the 1930's. By 2000, there were over 1 million confirmed followers, with an estimated 100,000 in Jamaica alone.
In July of 2666, Rastafarianism is the state religion of the Caribbean Empire, however the practice is limited to Jamaica, the Bahamas, and a few of the Lesser Antilles.
